Four coaches in four years! The Sun opens the "gambler-style" selection of coaches, and all the five candidates are "rookies"

The Phoenix Suns previously chose a "newcomer" like Brian Gregory as general manager rather than an old player who "goes into the palace".

Now it seems that the Suns will continue this idea in the selection of head coaches. According to multiple sources, the Suns have narrowed the list of new coach candidates to five, and each candidate will serve as NBA head coach for the first time. This shortlist was first disclosed by John Gambadoro, a widely-connected Phoenix Radio reporter, and was confirmed by Michael Scotto, a reporter from Hoopshype.

According to league sources, at least five candidates for the Suns have entered the next round of interviews for the head coaching position, including Jordan Ott and Johnnie Bryant of the Cavaliers, Sean Sweeney of the Mavericks, Chris Quinn of the Heat and Dave Bliss of the Thunder.

According to Duane Rankin, a reporter from the Arizona Republic, Timberwolves' chief assistant coach Micah Nori may also join the competition.

What these candidates have in common is that none of them have served as head coach in the NBA. They are highly respected in the league and have participated in coaching interviews for many other NBA teams, but have not yet taken the head coach seat.

The new coach will become the fourth coach of the Suns in the past four seasons, replacing Mike Budenholzer. In the just-concluded season, the Suns finished with a bad record of 36 wins and 46 losses, and despite having the highest salary in the league, they failed to even qualify for the playoffs. In addition to hiring new coaches, the Suns are expected to make major lineup adjustments this summer, with the first to be traded with Kevin Durant, and possibly Bradley Beal. The team plans to reorganize the lineup around Devin Booker rather than pulling it down, with the goal of returning to competitiveness next season.

For Gregory, and Mat Ishbia, the top priority is to build the team culture and incorporate it into the style of the game while ensuring that the new coach can become a practitioner of this style. Regardless of what Gregory imagines about the restructuring of the roster, he needs a coach who is not only proficient in tactics (XsandOs), but also allows players to identify with the new system. One of the problems with the Suns last season was the disconnect between the players and the coaching staff, which is exactly the situation that the new coach needs to reverse. It is undoubtedly a difficult task for a coach who coaches for the first time.
