May 12th According to the British media METRO, Carragher talked about the final ranking of the Premier League in an interview.
Carragher believes Chelsea will miss the Champions League qualification after they suffered a heavy blow against Newcastle United. Chelsea were ranked fifth ahead of last weekend’s match and they hoped to win at St James Park to increase their chances of entering the top five. However, Maresca's team ended up losing to Newcastle 0-2.
The top five Premier League places this season will be qualified for the Champions League next season. At present, Liverpool has secured a Champions League place, while Arsenal is currently ranked second with 68 points, and it is basically confirmed to advance. There is only 4 points behind third place Newcastle and seventh place Nottingham Forest, and there are two rounds left in the league. Carragher expects Nuno's side to miss the Champions League after Nottingham Forest drew with relegated Leicester City last weekend. This is a painful result for a team that has been ranked third most of the time but has seen a sharp decline in recent weeks, but the UEFA Cup will at least give Nottingham Forest a chance to compete in European competitions next season.
Carragher predicts that Chelsea will not be able to qualify for the Champions League in the next two games against Manchester United and Nottingham Forest. In response, Carragher said: "Chelsea will beat Manchester United, the question is whether they can beat Nottingham Forest away. There will be a strong atmosphere there, even if they have not qualified for the Champions League at that time, I think Nottingham Forest fans will express their gratitude for the season in the last game. They have already qualified for European competitions, which is a great achievement. I actually think Chelsea and Nottingham Forest will miss the Champions League and Aston Villa will enter."
Earlier, Carragher said that missing the Champions League again will be a "disaster" for Chelsea. He even suggested that some players could leave Stamford Bridge if Chelsea fails to qualify for the Champions League, especially England star Palmer.
In response to this, Carragher said: "Chelsea has spent more than a billion pounds. They have withdrawn from the Cup, and the UEFA United is not a real European game for them. They can always play with the bench to the finals, and they have to qualify for the Champions League. If not, it would be a disaster. From this game (losing to Brighton 0-3), what I worry most is not only their poor performance, but also Palmer's frustration. Imagine saying to Palmer that we will have to wait a few more years to enter the Champions League."
