May 4th The Telegraph wrote an article to disclose some behind the scenes of the Premier League referee company PGMOL (Professional Competition Officials Co., Ltd.), which disclosed that the company currently has a serious funding shortage.
It is reported that PGMOL's chief referee Weber will announce a new loss of up to 900,000 pounds next week. The loss of 379,000 pounds last year has been raised to 1.8 million pounds, and the cumulative loss in three years has reached 3.4 million pounds.
PGMOL's current budget is about £33 million. The club at the bottom of the Premier League has revenue of £110 million, and the new broadcast agreement will further increase after the effect of next season. Inflation, VAR costs, training time, equipment, and rental costs at the VAR center in Stockley Park have caused a surge in costs. As of the fiscal year ended July 2023, the previous losses were readjusted, including the severance payments of the resigning referees.
Web and COO Danielle Avery hope to reach a multi-year agreement with three PGMOL funders, similar to the agreement signed by the Premier League and EFL with broadcasters. They currently operate on an annual basis, relying on reserves to make up for losses, and the funders promise to provide guarantees to the organization.
