Italian Shooting! Belinelli officially retired. How do you evaluate his career?

1:14pm, 20 August 2025Basketball

Brothers, do you remember Belinelli? He has officially retired.

Recently, Belinelli posted a picture on social media, officially announcing the end of his basketball career. He wrote: "Basketball has given me everything, and I also tried my best. It is not easy to say goodbye, but the time has come."

Belinelli was the 18th pick in the first round of 2007. His career began with the Warriors. He didn't play much time in the rookie season, but he has shown good shooting skills, with a total of 41 three-pointers and a shooting percentage of 39.0%.

Second-year season, Belinelli got more opportunities, averaging 21 minutes per game, scoring 8.9 points, 1.7 rebounds and 2.1 assists, and his three-point shooting percentage reached 39.0%. In the offseason in 2009, Belinelli left the Warriors. In the following 11 years, he traveled to many teams, including the Raptors, Pelicans (formerly New Orleans Hornets), Bulls, Spurs, Kings, Hornets, Hawks, 76ers and other teams.

Among them, Belinelli was undoubtedly the most famous during the Spurs. The Spurs were also the only team he played for more than two years, and he played twice, each with a different meaning.

Berlinelli joined the Spurs in the summer of 2013, when the Spurs had just lost to the Heat in the finals and introduced Belinelli to strengthen their outside shooting, and his performance was not disappointing.

In the 2013-14 season, Belinelli played 80 games for the Spurs, averaging 25.2 minutes per game, scoring 11.4 points, 2.8 rebounds and 2.2 assists, shooting percentage of 48.5%/43.0%/84.7% in three events, and shooting percentage of 60.5%.

Under the Spurs' pass and cut system, Belinelli scored a career peak. His three-point shooting percentage and real shooting percentage were both the highest in his career, ranking fifth in the team in terms of score per game, second only to Parker (16.7 points), Duncan (15.1 points), Leonard (12.8 points), and Ginobili (12.1 points).

In addition, there are several things and several data worth noting:

1. Belinelli made 80 of 175 three-pointers in the season, with a shooting percentage of 45.7%

2. Belinelli made 39 of 86 three-pointers in the bottom corner of both sides of the season, with a shooting percentage of 45.3%

3. In the season, Belinelli made 3 points per game. The shooting percentage can rank 7th. In the All-Star three-point competition that year, Belinelli successfully defeated Curry, Irving, Lillard, Love, Bill and others to win the championship. These all show that Belinelli was one of the best three-point shooters in the league at that time. He had extremely strong ability to run without the ball, receive three-pointers, and open three-pointers. He was an important member of the peak Spurs of that team.

In the playoffs that year, the Spurs successfully won the fifth championship in team history. Although Belinelli's playing time was much shorter and his score was reduced to 5.4 points, his three-point shooting percentage remained at an excellent level of 42.1%. One year after winning the championship, that is, in the 2014-15 season, Belinelli still played for the Spurs, but his performance declined in his contract year, with his average score dropping to 9.2 points and his three-point shooting percentage also dropped to 37.4%.

This year, the Spurs were eliminated by the Clippers in the first round. Although Belinelli performed exceptionally well in the playoffs, averaged only 16 minutes per game and scored 9.3 points with a 46.7% three-point shooting percentage, the Spurs still did not leave it behind. After 2015, Belinelli joined four teams in three years, and then returned to the Spurs with 12 million in two years in 2018.

The Spurs at this time are already different from winning the championship four years ago. Duncan and Ginobili have retired, Parker went to the Hornets, Leonard and the Spurs were sent to the Raptors in conflict, and the team's core is DeRozan and Aldridge.

Berlinelli's positioning has not changed, and he is still a substitute + three-pointer. His performance:

-18-19 season, averaged 10.5 points per game, 37.2% from three-point shooting in the 19-20 season, averaged 6.3 points per game, and 37.6% from three-point shooting in the 2nd season, 34-year-old Belinelli returned to the Serie A and signed with his old club Bologna.

Leaving the NBA does not mean that he lacks abilities. On the contrary, until the last season, he was still one of the most threatening three-point shooters in the league. He also gave birth to a famous scene of swaying Morant without a ball. If it was a basic salary, the team should be willing to provide it.

The fact is also that after returning to Serie A, Belinelli helped the team win 2 Serie A championships, 3 Italian Super Cup championships, and 1 European Cup championship. He was also elected as the Serie A MVP in 2024.

Including his championship with the Spurs, and he won one Serie A, one Italian Cup, and one Italian Super Cup before joining the NBA, Belinelli has won a total of 10 championships in his career, which is quite brilliant.

I have some impressions of Belinelli. I am very good at running and receiving and shooting, and I shoot very quickly, and I often make some difficult three-pointers. However, like many shooters, the stability is hard to say. No one can stop him when he is strong, and no one can stop him when he is drawn.

If Belinelli was in this era, I personally think he might have achieved greater success. With his shooting and offensive level, he should be able to play good roles in many teams, and the contracts he received would be larger..

It is worth mentioning that Belinelli entered the professional league at the age of 16 and then played until he was 39. It is definitely not easy to say goodbye to the professional arena. I hope he will continue to enjoy life after retirement and will see him in other basketball positions one day.
