July 4th According to the latest report by the authoritative sports media "The Athletic", Pistons defender Malik Beasley is in multiple legal disputes. Under this circumstance, the Pistons are no longer likely to renew their contract with Beasley, who is currently a complete free agent. The report mentioned that on the day when the Pistons defeated the Knicks in the second game of the first round of the playoffs, a legal clerk submitted a complaint in person at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in New York, accusing Beasley of violating the marketing agreement and termination of the contract early, with the claim amount exceeding $2.5 million.
Beasley has been following in the NBA in 2016. At the age of 28, although he averaged 16.3 points per game for the Pistons in the 2024-25 season and hit a career high with a three-point shooting percentage of 41.6%, he was expected to receive a three-year contract renewal with a total of US$42 million. But the NBA informed the Pistons a few days before the free market opened that Beasley had been listed as a key focus of the investigation by local judicial authorities. Although not formally prosecuted yet, its attorney Steve Haney confirmed Beasley is under investigation and stressed that his clients "have not been charged with crimes and deserve the right to presumption of innocence."
According to The Athletic, Beasley has been sued for at least five times for financial problems, and more than a dozen other property liens are registered. For example, Hazan Sports, who paid Beasley a $625,000 upfront in November 2023, is now asking it to return the amount. Other cases include a rent arrears lawsuit in 2018, a lawsuit against failure to pay the owners’ association fees in 2021, and a $34,000 and $26,000 recovered by dental agencies and barbers in 2023, respectively. Most of these cases were paid off by Beasley after the majority passed the default judgment in early 2024.
The more serious legal trouble occurred in 2020, when he was arrested for threatening a family looking at a home with a gun at his suburban Minneapolis home, and police searched for it and found contraband. Despite facing multiple criminal charges, the Timberwolves still signed a four-year, $60 million contract extension with it in November of that year. He eventually pleaded guilty to the "violent threat" and served several weeks in the summer of 2021.
After that, Beasley fell into a debt cycle due to frequent borrowing. In 2021, he borrowed US$4.53 million from South River Capital, with an annualized interest rate of 12%, and a 10% late payment fee was charged. The company sued Beasley in 2022, and the court finally ruled that it would pay $1.13 million, which was partially repaid in 2023.
Between 2023 and 2024, he signed several mortgage agreements with Aliya Capital Partners, promising future NBA income, 2K authorized income, etc. as loan collateral. In the loan agreement in August 2024, Beasley even used his existing contract and future contracts in the NBA as debt guarantees. The latest lawsuit occurred during Beasley's Pistons, when a Detroit apartment owner is suing him for arrears of $7,355 in rent, which the owner has withdrawn a $14,000 lawsuit in March.
