A year ago, he was the savior of Real Madrid in the Champions League semi-finals, and now his goal is to play well in the Asian Championships.

Jose Luis Mato Sanmartin, who we call Joselu, was born in Stuttgart, Germany in 1990. In the second leg of the Champions League semi-final a year ago, Real Madrid's total score was still behind Bayern with 10 minutes left. Joselu was ordered to play in danger and came on as a substitute. He scored two goals in the 88th minute and the first minute of stoppage time, helping Real Madrid overtake the score and advance to the finals, and finally achieved the great achievement of the White Army's 15-winning Champions League championship.
The season ended, Joseru went to the Middle East and joined the Galafa Sports team in the Qatar League. Last weekend, the Qatar League started in the new season. Galafa Sports scored four goals in the first round when she was behind 0:2, defeating Umsharal 4:2. Joseru took the penalty and scored the team's first goal, sounding the horn of counterattack. After the game, he accepted an exclusive interview with Spain's Le Marca and expressed his great hope to help the team achieve good results in the AFC Champions League.
Q: The Qatar League started last week and you scored a goal. Is your goal to be the top scorer of the league this season?
Answer: It is always good to start with victory and goals. It doesn't matter if it's like last year (Galafa Sports drew 0-0 away with Hall in the first round of the league last year), because the team is already in the rising period. As a striker, scoring is always the most important thing, which is why I am happy with the start of the season.
Q: This is your second year in Qatar, what are your goals?
Answer: Both my team and I are working hard to improve. We won the Qatar Emir Cup last year and this year we will return to the AFC Champions League. Our goal is to achieve better results than last season: get as high scores as possible in the league; then have good performances in the AFC Champions League stage and strive to enter the knockout stage; and continue to have excellent performances in the Emir Cup in Qatar.
Q: Have you adapted to the afternoon training?
Answer: We train at 7 pm and there is no air conditioning. For me, the worst time of day here is at night with humidity as high as 80%. I prefer sunshine and humidity between 30-40%, even if the temperature is 44℃. The sweat shed in the evening training will make the training suit stick to her body... For me, training during that period was really hard.
Q: Sarabia and De Thomas have also come to the Qatar League, and there are 6 Spanish coaches among the 12 teams in the league. What does this mean?
Answer: I have met Pablo Amo (Doha Arabian Spanish coach) several times because I knew him when I was in Castilla, and I have talked to others. In fact, a few of them called me before coming and asked me to introduce them to the situation here, and I was a bit like an agent (laugh). The professionalism and popularity of the Qatar League are gradually increasing. Pablo Amo once served as the coach of the Spanish national team, and I had a deep conversation with him before he signed with the Doha Arab.
Q: In 2024, you will transfer from Real Madrid to "Serene" Qatar. How did you think about it?
Answer: It felt complicated at the beginning. You just won the Champions League with the best club in the world and won the European Cup with Spain... Leaving Real Madrid, no matter what club you go to, will be a huge change. In my career, I have enjoyed the most ordinary football, and later I realized the meaning of playing football at Real Madrid. It was a tough decision to leave Real Madrid, but I also had to consider my family and age. In the first few months I tried to make myself forget this, and now I have adapted to life here.
Q: That Champions League reversal has recorded you in the history of Real Madrid. Do you feel this way?
Answer: That's right, that's what they give me. I returned to my home in Madrid this summer and, while it has been over a year, the people on the street still remind me of those Bernabeu games. On social media, whenever Real Madrid plays, many people still remember me and I will always be grateful to all the fans.
Q: What if Alonso invites you back to Madrid to play your last remnant? There is nothing impossible on the football field...
Answer: (laughs) Alas, this gives me a big problem. In principle, I ruled out the possibility of returning to Spain. Moreover, I don't plan to be a coach anymore. When I retire, my football career will be enough. My career has envied many people, I enjoyed it very much, and I ended up achieving brilliant results in the European arena. This summer, I received more than one invitation to La Liga, including teams participating in the Champions League and teams downstream of the league, and they wanted me to go back there to play football again, but I didn’t, and my family and I were all very good in Qatar. Leaving Real Madrid was the hardest moment of my entire career because I abandoned my childhood dreams.
Q: Do you like to be able to go shopping in the mall with peace of mind?
Answer: Well, it depends on the situation...I didn't go with my family before because there were so many people surrounding me that the security guard had to come and "rescue" me... There will be a lot of people here on Fridays and Saturdays. Overall, though, if you are with your family, people will respect you more.
Q: Due to family reasons, you train with Kavajal this summer. How do you feel?
Answer: I saw him full of enthusiasm, like a child who had just entered the first team. He was very impatient to recover from his injuries. After all, he had been absent for a long time. He was eager to help the team win and become the player with the most championships in Real Madrid's history. You know him, he is a fighter. He was seriously injured, but he still persevered. We are talking about the best right-back in Real Madrid's history.
Q: Is Arnold's competition good or harmful?
Answer: We saw Real Madrid sign Arnold, or other players at the Carvajal position... But Carvajal's competitiveness is extraordinary. Since there are many games and there must be two players in each position, they don’t have to worry about either of them, both of them will have their own time. Playing 60 to 70 consecutive games is unsustainable, and Kavajal has also changed his nutrition plan and has been improving.
Q: Do you think the club and Real Madrid fans gave Lucas Vazquez the farewell they deserve?
Answer: Vazquez is my very good friend. We were on the phone a few days ago. He is a very important player, and I think he is a legend in the club, a special player. When I first came to Real Madrid, he gave me a lot of help. Of course, when you have to leave Real Madrid, the situation can be complicated. I felt bad when I watched his farewell ceremony at the Bernabeu. Anyway, I always wish him all the best because he is special to me.
Q: Real Madrid's performance last season was a bad one (all four were gone), but Mbappe scored 44 goals. Is he your first choice striker?
Answer: He is the Golden Boot winner, but in Real Madrid, you must have a championship that you win for the team, right? He is a natural shooter with incredible talent, but the Golden Globes won are in part closely related to the championship that year. Fans long for it, players long for it, and clubs long for it. This year, as the game adjusts, I hope both the team and him win more championships and more awards.
Q: Are you surprised that Gonzalo Garcia stayed in the first team after winning the Golden Boot Awards of the Club World Cup (tied)?
Answer: I said before that he trained with us when he was a child, and he was talented and scored many goals in the reserve team. I've talked to him and he always asks me a lot of questions. He is willing to give everything for this badge.
Q: Do you want to say your final farewell at the packed Bernabeu Stadium in the future?
Answer: How wonderful it would be if I could go to Real Madrid's stadium to hold a small farewell ceremony when I decided to retire a few years later. It will be a special moment for me because that club is my life. Being able to experience it all in a formal competition, being able to do something before the competition... that would be a very wonderful thing.
