Nottingham Forest head coach Nuno Espirito Santo said his "imbalanced" team had "major problems" as the Premier League return and warned that the team's current state was "far from its due level."
As Nottingham Forest is going to participate in the UEFA Cup this season, the club has signed three wingers: Dan Ndoye, Igor Jesus and Jair Cunya, while the main transfer is Anthony Ellanda joins Newcastle United for £55 million.
The club has reached a deal worth up to £30 million with Manchester City for James McCarty, while also pushing for three other signings, namely Ipswich winger Omari Hutchinson, Juventus midfielder Douglas Louis and Rennes striker Arnold Calimundor. They are also negotiating a new contract with Callum Hudson-Odoi.
Nottingham Forest will face Brentford at home, the team has performed poorly in the preseason, scoring only one goal in seven games, and Nuno admits the team's summer plan has not been achieved.
Before the start of the new season, Nuno said in an interview: "We are still far from our level we should be - very, very far. We are too far behind in preparation, planning and lineup."
"So we are very worried that in two or three days, we will be participating in the Premier League, which is the most competitive event in the world. And we are still far from the situation, very, very, very far."
"Our original plan was not realized. The preparations for the lineup were not ideal. We did not have the opportunity to build team cohesion- I think that's the most important thing."
"Because we don't know what the final roster will look like. We have some players here training, but they know they'll be on loan. We have a big problem."
The Nottingham Forest was in a special situation throughout the summer and they weren't sure exactly which European event they would compete in.
Crystal Palace was relegated from the Europa League, which allowed Forest to upgrade from the Europa League to the Europa League. The appeal filed by Crystal Palace to the Sports Arbitration Court also failed.
The funding difference between the two events is reportedly about £20 million, but Nuno said Nottingham Forest should not use this special situation as an excuse for the poor summer progress.
He added: "If you are going to play in European events - whether it is the UEFA Cup or the UEFA Union - you know we will face new challenges. So there is no difference in preparation."
"We have lost the opportunity to do things better, and this opportunity will not come back."
When asked how we will deal with the first round of the Premier League, Nuno said: "Let's look at our strategy. Our lineup is uneven and there are no alternatives in many, many positions. So we are actually taking a big risk in the game."
Anthony Ellanga "is difficult to replace" - but Gibbs White staying at the team "is crucial"
Nuno also admitted that he was disappointed to see Ellanga transfer to Newcastle United. The Swedish winger contributed 11 assists in the Premier League last season, with only Jacob Murphy and Mohamed Salah having more assists than he did.
When asked how difficult it is to replace Ellanga, Nuno said: "It's very difficult, very difficult - because Anthony's (role) is very special in both work and the characteristics he has."
"So it's not easy to replace Anthony. It's not easy at all."
However, there is also good news for Nottingham Forest, core midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White promised to sign a new contract.
Tottenham Hotspur had offered a £60 million offer for the England international, which triggered his termination clause, but the deal stalled after Nottingham Forest threatened to sue Tottenham for illegal contact with players and player agents for violating a confidentiality agreement on the clause.
Nuno revealed that club chairman Marinakis played a key role in persuading Gibbs-White to stay.
"I think a lot has happened around Morgan's situation," Nuno said, "but most importantly, thanks to the club's president, who personally stepped in and solved the issue."
"He is very important. Morgan is a very important player to us, not only because of the contribution he has made to us on the court, but also because he is one of the captains of the team. He is a leader who leads by example, a good guy - he has his own ambitions and is eager to improve. This spirit is infectious."
