Sevilla takes over former AEK coach Almeida, and he continues to write coaching legend for two years

6:06am, 20 June 2025Football

The Sevilla Club officially announced on Monday that former AEK Athens head coach Mattias Almeida has become their new coach, the club's sixth change of coach in just two years. Almeida, an Argentine celebrity who played for Sevilla in the mid-1990s, has returned to his hometown and shouldered the important task of rebuilding the team.

While Almeida was in charge of AEK Athens, he led the team to 134 games, achieving a record of 80 wins, 24 draws and 30 losses, showing outstanding coaching ability. However, since Hulun Lopetegui left office in 2022, Sevilla's coaching position has been frequently changed like a revolving lantern, and no successor can stay in the coaching position for more than 34 games. Even Jose Luis Mendilibar, a meritorious coach of the UEFA Cup last season, was dismissed early due to a poor start to the league.

Almeida's return this time is carrying a three-year contract, aiming to stabilize the morale of the army. His past coaching experience at Athletic Guadalajara, Mexico and the San Jose earthquake in the United States proves that he is not only a capable coach, but also has the ability to coach for a long time. During his three-year term at AEK Athens, he led the team to the league championship and the cup championship once each, despite ultimately failing to achieve ideal results in the Greek Super League playoffs.

In contrast, Sevilla's situation is worrying. They avoided the fate of relegation to the second division by only one point last season, ranking only higher than the relegation zone, leading Leganes, who is at the bottom. The arrival of Almeida undoubtedly injected a shot of a smart shot into this old La Liga powerhouse. We look forward to him leading the team out of the trough and regaining the glory of the past.
